It is 1917, and Josef Warner can’t remember who he is. All he knows is that a man claiming to be his biological father has saved his life and wants to take him home. As he meets the family that never knew him, the pieces to his past trickle back to him in small bits. Their neighbor, the intriguing Lissa Rose Parker, is a young nurse who helps him to recover from his injuries. Before meeting Josef, Lissa volunteered to serve as a Red Cross nurse in the Great War. Falling in love with Josef tests her resolve, but she believes her service is God’s will, therefore the right thing to do. While Lissa tends wounded and sick patients, Josef has enlisted as a soldier. During his time in uniform, his mysterious past will come to haunt both him and his family. The return of his memory will reveal devastating secrets that he is sure Lissa will not accept. He must make a series of terrible choices that will test his willingness to follow God’s Plan—and test his love for Lissa. Faith in God, war, betrayal, and heroism will play into the outcome. But will Josef and Lissa’s tender love survive battles both abroad and at home? In the sequel to Lang’s PIECES OF SILVER, Josef returns a changed man with no memory of his past misdeeds. His multilayered character is a nice complement to the intelligent and heartwarming character of Lissa. They have clear personalities, backgrounds, and goals, providing a good romantic match. Several secondary characters add depth to the story without overwhelming the primaries, creating a well-rounded and believable cast. The World War I setting is exceptionally crafted. Physical settings make up only part of the atmosphere. General attitudes from the time are beautifully rendered, as are period tidbits, such as the luxury of electricity installed in a country home, and motorcars of the time. Perhaps the most moving are the descriptions of battlegrounds, areas of captivity, and the desperation found in war-torn hospitals fighting injuries and a crippling wave of influenza. Although I recommend picking up PIECES OF SILVER first, readers will have no problem should they choose instead to start with REMEMBER ME. Either way, both novels deliver wonderfully written stories in difficult, yet inspiring, settings. Pick up Lang’s work today: you won’t regret it.
