The choice to self-publish a book is controversial in the industry. In the end, it is a matter of opinion. Authors who choose to self-publish rarely go about the decision lightly. It is a difficult road for the writers, and the quality ranges from truly horrible to outstanding. The rating system used on this website is equally applied to books that are self published, with the slight exception that a certain amount of leniency may be allowed for technical issues that would have been addressed had these titles been released by major publishing houses. The authors may or may not be able to afford professional proofreading to improve their manuscripts, and, when known either way, this is taken into account in each review. Many of these editing issues are barely noticed by the average reader. More information about self-publishing, vanity publishers, legitimacy vs. scams will be available at a later date.
