She started life as Desiree Mirabella Torres Jackson, but anyone and everyone would come to know her as Dez. Breathtakingly beautiful and totally unforgettable, Dez has done just about everything to make a name for herself as a woman on top, a woman to be reckoned with in the music industry. Bentley and Sparks are brothers—both in blood and in business, the music business that is. Bentley is the rap artist and Sparks is the brains, although the management of “Titanium” is split between the two. Bentley spots Dez at a nightclub in Miami, and it’s fireworks from the moment they meet. At that same club, Sparks meets Leilani, a friend of Dez’s and they hit it off as well. From an abusive childhood to having it all, Dez is the epitome of the rags-to-riches tale with all the lumps and bumps along the way. She never imaged that true love does exist until she hooks up with Bentley, and when her past rears its ugly head their relationship almost ends before it has a chance to blossom. Dez has fought tooth and nail to get to the top, and she wouldn’t change a thing. The problem is, not everyone believes Dez deserves to be at the top, especially those she wasn’t nice to on the way up. Now is the time to enjoy success or die trying. Authentic language, realistic situations and gritty characters make The Rolexxx Club seem like a true slice of a rising rap star’s life. Love her or despise her, Dez is a fascinating character who keeps the reader glued to her story page after page. Meta Smith has written a complex and emotional foray into the human spirit and the will to succeed. Reviewed by Lisa D. Guest
