The impact of World War I, or the Great War, has been felt by everyone. It is more dire for German-Americans, whose loyalties are questioned for reasons as simple as their lineage. Jobs are being terminated, neighbors shunned, and futures darkened.

Liesel Bonner is no exception. A brilliant stenographer, her career has been snatched away by a government that won't look past her name. Worse, the man she has always looked to for comfort has fallen under suspicion of treason, and Justice Department Agent David de Serre has come to her for help.

Liesel must weigh family loyalties, patriotism, and God's Will to make what she hopes are the right choices. It doesn't help that de Serre becomes more than a frightening distraction.

In a voice as clear as if she had lived in the early 1900s, Lang unfolds a tale of faith, lies, betrayal, and love in a tumultuous time. The characters are drawn in convincing fashion, and the period setting in Washinton D.C. takes the reader there.

Another aspect that makes this novel enjoyable is the lack of heavy-handed preaching. Faith issues and dilemmas are handled in realistic terms that allow the reader room to enjoy the story. This lack of "gloom and doom" attitude opens the door to a wider audience that will appreciate the entire story.

Finally, the romance is tender and sweet, but far from sappy. By the end, these are real people with a real relationship that readers can identify with.

This is a highly recommended read.
