Auron is a dragon hatchling. He is gray, which means he is without scales. His hide is easily pierced, but he is quick, intelligent and the champion of his clutch. While still a hatchling, his family is attacked by ruthless dragon hunters. Auron escapes with one of his sisters, but they are soon separated. Thus, Auron begins a journey over great distances and many years. In a world where dragons are considered dangerous beasts, he must evade capture, dodge hunters, and find direction. Over the years, he will make unusual friends and see unimaginable sights. When he learns of a reprehensible plot involving dragons, he will make the choice of a lifetime. E.E. Knight brings a fabulous new voice to draconic mythos. Through his writing, readers will see the world through Auron’s senses. They will view distant vistas and underground passages, hear faraway hoof beats and wolf cries, smell friend and foe, taste tears and prey, and feel the glorious sensations of dragon dashing and flight. Knight’s fantasy world is traditional in setting, fresh in texture. The major races of humans, elves, and dwarves are present, as well as blighters, another hominid species. DRAGON CHAMPION is a worthy introduction to Knight’s new “The Age of Fire” series. Through this unique perspective, Knight creates a compelling fantasy worthy of attention from genre fans. Auron’s story is brutal and not for the weak of heart. But it is a monumental journey of discovery and, ultimately, courage. Reviewed by Christina Wantz Fixemer
