Rice's Heir Apparent?

Reviewed by Christina Wantz Fixemer

Vampire William Cuyler Thorne is content to run his import business in Savannah, Georgia. His protégé, Jack McShane, is a good ol' boy who loves fast cars and faster women. When William's vampiric sire arrives in town, all that changes.

William has to find a way to protect Jack, other New World vampires, and a host of beloved humans. The only obstacles are Jack's stubbornness, the arrival of a real European vamp, and a host of other annoying problems. With a little luck and a lot of magic, William just might save everyone in Savannah from a real monster.

In her debut appearance, Raven Hart has burst onto the vampire scene with preternaturally strong writing. The narrative is split between the two main characters in a less-commonly used format, with the name of the "speaker" heading each section. Each voice is recognizable, leaving very little room for reader confusion.

While some elements are common to vampire books by Anne Rice and others, Hart has undoubtedly stamped this novel with her own brand. She pulls no punches and takes the reader to the edge in this well-paced story. While there could be more lush description in places, this is easily forgotten in the heat of many moments.

Readers who enjoy vampire fiction should expect lots of violence, gratuitous sex, and evil. After all, this is what vampires are made of . . . Yes?
