In the late 23rd century, long after WWIII was over, people survived underground.  From the Rockies to the Mississippi River in what is called New America, there are miles and miles of underground living spaces for the surviving humans.  Maris lives there with her partner, Major Cooper Sayer.  Maris works in the central library and makes the best of what life they have.  At twenty-three, she intends to take what pleasure she can with her partner for as long as possible, since people rarely survive past the age of thirty-five.

Major Cooper “Coop” Sayer works for the New America Government (NAG) in Security.  He is a good, decent, honest man who loves his partner with all his heart.  Although he can be gone for days on end doing his job, Coop lives for the time he comes home to Maris.

Nothing is more important to them than each other. As time goes on, Coop worries about just how many years they still have together below the earth.   Coop knows many secrets, secrets that could mean the difference between ten years or fifty years together.  Once the decision is made, the two will put into motion something that could guarantee them a true lifetime together—or an immediate death sentence.

Tilly Greene writes an intricate futuristic tale filled with layer upon layer of lies and deception for the reader to fathom out.  While the beginning is a little bumpy—with too much going on at once—the story does smooth out to let Maris and Coop capture the imagination. Maris gains strength, and Coop is a downright alpha-plus male.  NEW BEGINNINGS: CARPE DIEM is extremely hot, a scorcher at times, in fact, so be warned.  Unfortunately, an awkward start, entertaining plot and sudden finish makes CARPE DIEM an uneven story.
