Detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are on the trail of a serial killer. The murders are grisly, with mutilated bodies and satanic markings at the scenes. The investigation leads Rizzoli and Isles to a society of wealthy people searching for proof that evil exists in a physical, possibly demonic presence. This “Mephisto Club” draws on arcane histories and modern intelligence in order to track evil’s embodiment. Even as the murders are being investigated in Boston, a young woman is living overseas to hide from the very thing the Mephisto Club seeks. Imbued with suspenseful tension, Tess Gerritsen’s THE MEPHISTO CLUB brings Rizzoli and Isles back to investigate a terrifying case where no one is safe. Frequent flashes to the killer’s point of view and that of Lily Saul, the woman on the run, heighten the scope of this novel. While these diversions, especially with Lily’s story, may be distracting at times, they serve to deepen the reader’s understanding of the stakes, which are immeasurable. Fans of Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles will eat this suspense up even as they remain open to future adventures with the members of the Mephisto Club. Reviewed by Christina Wantz Fixemer
