On twenty-seventh century earth, five hundred-year old vampire Detective Devon Harrigan is pursing a serial criminal called The Black Hole Killer. The Black Hole Killer is kidnapping or killing non-mortals while at the same time ripping holes in the fabric of the Veil, a magical barrier protecting earth from the alternate reality, which opened the globe to horrors hundreds of years before. During his investigation, Harrigan is forced to guard Lady Helen, a woman charged with being the savior of the world and keeper of the Veil. Together they overcome their disparate backgrounds in order to protect the veil from destruction and unexpectedly find love. Fowler pens an interesting world filled with werewolves, vampires and other creatures that have been forced to find ways to coexist with humans. The vivid detail and unique characterizations draw the reader in as this story filled with adventure, magic and romance unfolds. However, Fowler stumbles in the heavy use of twentieth-century pop-culture references, which jar the reader out of this beautifully drawn world. It is doubtful the Addams Family survives another hundred years, let alone a massive multi-dimensional war. Still, fans of this genre will appreciate the fast-paced plot and will be waiting for the next installment to see whether the vampire, Harrington, and the lady of light, Helen, can overcome not only the threat to the world, but their own differences in order to find happiness.
