Bosch is Back!

Reviewed by Christina Wantz Fixemer

Detective Harry Bosch is back. As a member of the Open-Unsolved Unit of the LAPD, he can’t get a 1993 case out of his head. Too many questions remain unanswered—until today. A suspect has confessed to murdering Marie Gesto all those years ago, as well as many others since. When a critical mistake is discovered from the 1993 Gesto case, Bosch is forced to face the onus of missing a possible suspect who went on to kill many more victims.

Although the case appears to be solved, several factors aren’t adding up, and Bosch wants to know why. He’ll need to find answers fast when the confessed killer’s rage is unleashed on an unsuspecting community.

Although this novel gets off to a slow start, it picks up pace in time to keep readers’ attention. Bosch is the kind of detective suspense fans enjoy to follow. His old-school approach to getting things done is a great antithesis to the red-tape mess that plagues today’s law enforcement. When he’s on the job, you know he’ll get it done—even if kicked off the case.

Overall, this is a good read. Some elements to the story feel a bit forced (can’t say what without throwing in spoilers), and some readers may hit on the solution a little too early. But if you’re a Connelly fan, don’t miss this novel. It’ll keep most readers guessing, and those that figure it out will still enjoy the ride.
